Narcos Review

Narcos is one of the hit shows released on Netflix in 2015. It has aired 2 seasons so far and is currently renewed for 2 additional seasons.

This TV show follows the US DEA war against drugs and set around the time where cocaine being the new drug swept across South America and the US in the late 1970s. It shows the life of drug lords and their empires they built from drug money and the huge power and influence they had during that era.

Seasons 1 and 2 primarily showcased the life of the notorious Pablo Escobar and how he started his career from trafficking illegal goods (alcohol, cigarettes and arms) across borders and soon after took over the manufacturing and distribution of the new drug cocaine from Columbia and primarily to the US. The story is narrated from the perspective of Steve Murphy, an american DEA agent, who worked in Columbia along side Javier Peña to crackdown the Medellin cartel which Escobar was leading. It shows the rise of the drug lord and his supreme control over Columbia as well as his interference and defiance to Columbia’s politics. It follows with the hideout of Escobar after his escape from the 5-stars jail he was kept in, and his betrayal by his cartel members. Soon after, he was located by intercepting his communication and was executed on site during his escape.

The acting and direction are a marvel. Being based on true events, adds to the shows allure. The show gained huge popularity and continues to do so.

We shall wait for the upcoming seasons in hopes to deliver the same success despite the fact that Escobar is no longer the series showcase.
